Why are most washers and dryers white? Historically, it's because if one appliance dies, a replacement of any make or model will match the other mate. Since most laundry rooms or closets are out of sight, most manufacturers don't think twice about style or color. It's as if the the industry is run by Henry Ford.

So when I went shopping for a new washer and dryer last weekend, I saw the usual row after row of white appliances. An occasional gray model broke the monotony, but not by much.

Then, pow! A LG TROMM Steamwasher and dryer painted a wild cherry red stunned me with its remarkable presence. It was just like seeing an eye-popping car among hundreds of ones that look virtually the same. The red paint sparkled. The buttons were high-polish chrome. The Batman-level features were sexy. Sexy!

They were a bit more expensive than the standard white ones nearby, but the LG's became the new standard by which to judge all others. Red struck a chord. Red stuck.

A washer and dryer is not an impulse purchase, so like 87% of most Americans, I went home and Googled the LG's up and down. The word of mouth held up. Much of the online buzz was about the washer's SteamFresh Cycle, which uses steam to remove wrinkles and odors or just refresh clothes. Even the clerk at another store who sold a high-end German brand conceded he hears few complaints about the LG's.

A red washer and dryer is not for everyone. You might even be saying, "A red washer and dryer? How stupid. Why pay more for a fancy paint job?" But, of course, people hundreds or thousands of dollars for watches that do the exact same thing as a $16 Timex does. Homogeneity is not the pathway to word of mouth. Incorporating wild cherry word of mouth into the DNA of a product is the first step.

MySpace Deleting Sex Offender Profiles

The MySpace profiles of a "few thousand" convicted sex offenders have been removed, the popular social networking site said Tuesday. But the company says it will not hand over the users' names to states requesting the data.

The company had previously announced a program in December that will identify and block sex offenders that were attempting to use the site. Called Sentinel Safe, the technology matches information on profiles with a database of about 550,000 sex offenders nationwide.

MySpace is also being pressured by the Attorneys General of eight states to hand over information on sex offenders using the site by May 29, although the company is declining to do so. It claims both federal and state laws prohibit the release of such information.

Those states requesting the release of data were: Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and New Hampshire.

"We are doing everything short of breaking the law to ensure that the information about these predators gets to the proper authorities," chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam said. "MySpace has zero tolerance for sexual predators which is why we devoted a team of engineers to work around the clock with Sentinel Tech."

The software has been active for only about two weeks, yet MySpace claims it had already found and removed the profile of every registered sex offender from its more than 175 million profiles.

Lobbyists working on behalf of MySpace are asking for federal laws that would require sex offenders to register their e-mail address, making it easier for companies like MySpace to scan for their presence.

Brightest Supernova Ever

The brightest star explosion ever seen has been spotted about 240 million light-years away in the constellation Perseus, researchers announced yesterday.

The distant event, which so far has remained brighter than an ordinary supernova for more than 200 days, likely represents a new and extremely rare type of star death that occurs only in supermassive stars.

"It's no surprise that a very massive star will eventually collapse," David Pooley, an astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-author of a new study on the supernova, said during a press briefing.

But what surprised scientists is that the brightness of the explosion couldn't be explained by the faint amount of x-rays emitted by the blast.

Normally when a large star dies, the explosion sends shockwaves through surrounding cooler gases, creating regions that emit large amounts of x-rays—the source of a supernova's light.

But the explosion of SN 2006gy, which is thought to be nearly 150 times as massive as the sun, showed few x-rays.

This suggests that the light is being produced from hot material being ejected into space.

"This would require a new type of [explosion] mechanism that has been produced theoretically but never observed," study leader Nathan Smith said at the briefing.

The finding has ramifications for Eta Carinae, the most massive star in our galaxy, which lies just 7,400 light years away.

This star, estimated to be 100 to 120 times the sun's mass, has been experiencing preliminary eruptions that could mean it will explode in a manner similar to SN 2006gy.

If such a supernova occurred in our galaxy, "it would be so bright that you could see it [from Earth] during the day and you could even read a book by its light at night," Pooley said. more

King Herod's Tomb Said Found Near Jerusalem

May 8, 2007—After more than 30 years of searching, Hebrew University professor Ehud Netzer today announced that he and his partners have unearthed the remains of King Herod the Great's grave, sarcophagus, and mausoleum, solving one of Israel's great archaeological mysteries.

Shown here is the general area of what he says is Herod's tomb, uncovered at the elaborate Herodium complex about 9 miles (15 kilometers) south of Jerusalem.

Remains of many structures that once covered the tomb area, as well as passages leading to underground water wells, can be seen all around the excavation site.
