King Herod's Tomb Said Found Near Jerusalem

May 8, 2007After more than 30 years of searching, Hebrew University professor Ehud Netzer today announced that he and his partners have unearthed the remains of King Herod the Great's grave, sarcophagus, and mausoleum, solving one of Israel's great archaeological mysteries.

Shown here is the general area of what he says is Herod's tomb, uncovered at the elaborate Herodium complex about 9 miles (15 kilometers) south of Jerusalem.

Remains of many structures that once covered the tomb area, as well as passages leading to underground water wells, can be seen all around the excavation site.
