WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - One of two humpback whales surfaces in the Port of Sacramento in West Sacramento, Calif., Thursday, May 17, 2007. Scientists were sent whale noises into the water in an effort to attract the whales, believed to be a mother and her calf, back down the river and to the ocean.

Biologists tried unsuccessfully Thursday to use recorded siren songs of humpback whales to lure an injured female and her wounded calf from a shipping channel and back toward the Pacific Ocean 90 miles away. more
